Indigo Workwear Jacket - Shibori

INDIGO SHIBORI WORKWEAR JACKET

A timeless workwear-inspired jacket, individually hand dyed using natural indigo and the traditional Japanese art of shibori.

Each piece is slowly dyed by hand in my Devon studio using traditional indigo vat methods. The cloth is individually folded and bound before passing through repeated immersions and oxidation cycles within the indigo vat. As the bindings are removed, intricate patterns emerge through the meeting of fibre, indigo, pressure and chance.

Crafted from durable organic cotton and stitched with organic cotton thread, the jacket is designed as a practical everyday layer that celebrates traditional craft, natural colour and thoughtful making.

Inspired by classic utility jackets, it features a relaxed cropped silhouette, three-quarter length sleeves, a traditional collar and generous front patch pockets. The loose one-size fit layers beautifully over dresses, knitwear, shirts and simple everyday clothing.

Developed slowly over many months, this collection reflects an ongoing process of refining the pattern, fit, fabric and dye technique to create a garment designed to be worn, repaired and treasured for years.

THE PROCESS

Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist-dyeing tradition in which cloth is folded, bound, stitched or compressed before dyeing.

Areas protected from the indigo remain lighter, while exposed areas gradually develop rich layered blues through repeated immersions in the vat.

The resulting patterns are revealed only once the bindings are removed, making every jacket a collaboration between maker, material and process. Every fold and binding leaves its own record within the cloth, creating a textile that can never be replicated exactly.

THE COLOUR

Indigo is one of the world's oldest and most revered dye plants.

Across cultures and centuries it has coloured cloth for work, ceremony and daily life. Unlike synthetic dyes, natural indigo is created through the living alchemy of fermentation, oxygen and time. With each immersion into the vat, the cloth emerges green before gradually transforming to blue as it meets the air.

Combined with shibori, indigo reveals its expressive nature, creating landscapes of light and dark, movement and stillness, structure and spontaneity. The slow rhythm of the dye vat and the resist process produces remarkable depth and luminosity that cannot be replicated industrially.

CARE

Wash only when needed.

Cool hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle using a mild detergent.

Dry naturally.

Like all naturally dyed textiles, the colour will continue to soften and develop character over time, becoming part of the story of both the garment and its wearer.

Variations in pattern, tone, depth of colour and natural markings are an inherent part of the shibori and natural indigo dyeing process and are celebrated as part of the beauty and individuality of each garment.
