Himalayan Rhubarb Extract

Himalayan Rhubarb is an aromatic natural dye obtained from the roots of the Rheum Emodi plant.

Colours:
Golden yellows on silk and wool with pinkish browns on plant fibres with an alum mordant

Info/about:
The plant grows at 3000-5000 meters altitude and yields a deep golden yellow color with an alum mordant.

Herbal and traditional uses:
Known as the “Lord” or “King of herbs”, and a used for a wide range of human ailments by medicinal herbalists, for conditions related to the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, respiratory and skeletal systems as well as to infectious diseases.

Mordants/Modifiers:
Acids give more yellowy shades while alkaline shift colours towards bright reds.
Use to overdye with indigo for olive shades of green.

Traditionally this natural dye comes from the Himalayan mountains between India and Bhutan.

Extraction technique:
Rheum Emodi rhizomes and roots are dried, chopped up, ground to a powder and extracted in an aqueous medium from dry powdered materials.
